I don’t know about you guys, but when I find something I like I generally stick to it. Allow me to introduce my favorite smoothie. Yes, I may have had my favorites before, but for the past 2+ years, this has been my go-to.
For anyone who knows me, you know I like to keep things simple as possible. So I came up with an all natural, high carb smoothie. I was looking for a smoothie to provide me with enough energy throughout the day, while not weighing me down. But, most importantly packed full of vitamins and nutrients that I’m always looking for.
Introducing Daterade. What is daterade you may wonder? It is a smoothie made of bananas and dates. Dates add a nice caramel taste when paired with bananas. Simple, right? It’s sweet and creamy like fudge. This is my go-to smoothie for a nice pick-me-up breakfast or mid-day meal and even for my post-workout recovery drink.
After a workout a lot of people reach for a protein shake, but I realized that what you need to replace are the carbs. The natural sugars you get from bananas and dates help to replace the glycogen you need to replace in your body. You can even sub water for coconut water to help replenish your electrolytes and sodium post-workout.
Ingredients (serves 4-8)
- 4 medium spotted bananas
- 8 medjool dates
- 1 litre water
*1 tsp ground cinnamon
*1 tsp ground ginger
*If not water, sub coconut water
*It can be made to your preference, just add more dates if you need more calories or want it thicker, for a thinner consistency add more water.
- Put all the ingredients into your high-speed blender, blend on high until creamy and frothy.
*Dates are high in chloride which aids digestion.
*Bananas contain potassium which helps our muscles to work properly. This is especially important after exercise so that our muscles can repair and grow.
*Drinking a smoothie like this is better than your average energy drink because it provides just as much energy and sugar but it also provides your body with other nutrients like fibre and vitamins & minerals which are needed when you work hard at the gym.
Typically, dates can be very dry, their water content is often as low as 20% of the weight. This can cause them to stick to your teeth and feel heavy in the stomach. That’s why I blend them with water or coconut water to make this creamy delicious and fresh drink.
